He continues to serve as its Chief Medical Officer and has grown his practice with two more physicians. He also has hospital privileges at Jeanes Hospital and Nazareth Hospital. As one of the first physicians in private practice in the Philadelphia area to incorporate an electronic medical record system in 2005, Dr. Mercado remains interested in staying ahead with the latest digital and electronic advancements that are available. Dr. Mercado was born and raised in San Juan, Puerto Rico. With his mother’s continuous support and encouragement, he pursued a career in medicine. He completed his Bachelor of Science at the University of Puerto Rico. After completing his undergraduate studies, he attended Central del Caribe University School of Medicine in Puerto Rico and graduated with his M.D. Subsequently, he did his internal medicine residency at MCP Hahnemann University in Philadelphia.
Following his residency, he felt the Spanish speaking population in the Philadelphia area needed a bilingual clinic to go to, so he started up his own practice in North Philadelphia at the formerly known Park View Hospital. A few years later, he moved his expanding practice to the Jeanes Hospital Physician Office Building and created a welcoming and culturally sensitive medical home for all of his patients. His practice mission statement clearly puts patients care first.
Dr. Mercado has won accolades and awards over the years including the Patients’ Choice Award in 2011 for the Pennsylvania region and was named a Top 10 Doctor in 2012 for the “Internist in Fox Chase/Burholme” category. Dr. Mercado has had many different professional affiliations in his career. Since 2011, he has served on the House of Delegates of the Pennsylvania Medical Society.
He served as the Director of the Community Outreach Program through the Temple University Health System in 2007-2012. He is a member of the Catholic Medical Association and the American College of Physicians. Dr. Mercado has remained active in the community as well. He volunteered giving community medical Spanish lectures at The Philadelphia Salvation Army Church and Philadelphia Corporation for Aging. He’s also appeared on Telemundo Spanish Network as part of the medical advisory program for the television show “En Portada.”
Dr. Mercado has been on the cutting edge in his treatment of patients with certain debilitating chronic diseases such as diabetes, osteoarthritis, hypertension and depression. For several years, he served as a Key Opinion Leader on the Novo Nordisk multi-cultural advisory board to help create the most effective treatments (pharmacological and non-pharmacological) for patients with diabetes. Most recently, his practice has joined a clinical trial treatment study through the AASEM.DTSC examining patients with lower extremity neuropathy.
